Cloudy, foamy urine in females: what to know

Bubbles may appear when urine hits the water quickly, while cloudiness can come from crystals, mucus, or cells. Noticing foam once does not identify a disease. Dehydration can make urine darker and more concentrated; see Dehydration for related guidance.

A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine, an unusual smell, burning, urgency, or frequent trips to the toilet. A kidney infection may add fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side. In females, discharge can mix with a urine sample and alter its appearance.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the appearance settles. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or vaginal treatments based only on urine appearance.

Arrange a medical review if the change continues, returns repeatedly, or occurs with burning, urgency, blood, pelvic discomfort, or an unusual discharge. A clinician may ask about medicines, periods, sexual health, and hydration, then request a clean-catch urine sample.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever with urinary symptoms, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or visible blood in the urine. Pregnancy, kidney disease, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for prompt assessment.

Ask whether the urine needs testing, whether discharge could be affecting the sample, and which symptoms would suggest a urinary tract infection or kidney infection. Mention when the change began, how often it occurs, and any new medicines or supplements.
