What should you know about cloudy color urine?

Urine may look darker yellow when it is concentrated, especially after sweating, vomiting or simply drinking less. A hazy or milky appearance can reflect mineral crystals, mucus or cells. Burning, urgency, frequent small trips to the toilet or lower abdominal discomfort are features that can accompany a urinary tract infection. Back or side pain with fever suggests a need to consider kidney infection. Colour by itself cannot confirm a diagnosis.

Drink to thirst and keep a brief record of the colour, smell and symptoms rather than repeatedly checking isolated samples. If the appearance improves as you return to your usual fluid intake, continue to watch for recurrence. Arrange medical advice when cloudiness lasts, comes back often, or occurs with pain, fever, blood or difficulty urinating. Bring a list of medicines and supplements to the appointment.

Get urgent help for fever with flank or back pain, vomiting that prevents drinking, severe abdominal pain, confusion, faintness or inability to pass urine. Visible blood also deserves prompt assessment. People who are pregnant or who have kidney problems should seek advice early if a colour change is accompanied by urinary symptoms.

Ask whether your symptoms call for urine testing, how much fluid is suitable for you, and whether a medicine or supplement could alter urine colour. Explain when the change began and mention any pain, odour, discharge, fever or blood.
