What should you know about cloudy and yellow urine?

Yellow urine is often more noticeable when you have taken in less fluid, while cloudiness can come from salts, mucus or cells in the urine. A strong smell, burning when passing urine, needing to go often or lower abdominal discomfort can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back raises concern for infection involving the kidneys. Urine appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the colour becomes lighter and the cloudiness settles. Do not use leftover antibiotics or rely on supplements to treat new urinary symptoms. Arrange a clinical assessment if the change persists, returns repeatedly, or comes with burning, urgency or pelvic pain; a urine test can help distinguish infection from other causes.

Seek urgent medical help for fever with pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Visible blood, severe pain, or feeling suddenly very unwell also warrants prompt assessment. If you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have a weakened immune system, contact a clinician sooner when urinary changes are accompanied by discomfort or fever.

Ask whether you need a urine test, whether your medicines or supplements could affect urine appearance, and which symptoms should prompt same-day review. Tell the clinician when the change began, how much you are drinking, and whether pain, smell, fever or blood has appeared.
