What should you know about cloudy and odor urine?

A stronger smell may occur when urine is concentrated, after certain foods, or with some medicines and supplements. Cloudiness may result from crystals, mucus, cells, or infection. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy, strong-smelling urine and may include burning, urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection may cause fever, chills, nausea, or side and back pain as well. Smell alone cannot establish the cause.

Think about recent changes in fluid intake, diet, medicines, and supplements, and note when the odor began. Drink fluids normally unless you have been given a fluid limit. Arrange a clinical review if the odor and cloudiness last, recur, or occur with pain, burning, urgency, fever, or blood. A urine sample can help distinguish infection from other explanations.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, very little urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Severe pain or inability to keep fluids down requires urgent help.

Ask whether your symptoms call for a urine test, whether a medicine or supplement could explain the odor, and what warning signs should lead you back for review. Mention any pregnancy, fluid restriction, or previous urinary infections.
