What should you know about cloudy and foamy urine?

Foam can form when urine hits the water forcefully, when the urine is concentrated, or when cleaning products are present in the toilet. Cloudiness may reflect crystals, mucus, cells, or infection. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy urine and may also cause burning, frequent urination, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can add fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Persistent froth is worth discussing because a urine test can look for protein and other changes.

Observe the urine in a clean, clear container if you need to describe it accurately, and note whether the foam disappears quickly or remains. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has prescribed a fluid limit. Arrange an appointment when foam is repeated, cloudiness lasts, or symptoms such as swelling, burning, urgency, or unusual tiredness appear. Bring a list of medicines and supplements to the visit.

Get prompt care for cloudy foamy urine with fever, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, new swelling, markedly reduced urination, or feeling very unwell. Severe pain, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down calls for urgent help.

Ask whether a urine test should check for infection or protein, whether medicines could affect the appearance, and what changes should lead to follow-up. Explain how often the foam occurs and whether it is present with every urination.
