What should you know about cloudy amber colored urine?

Amber urine can appear when the urine is more concentrated, such as after sweating, drinking less than usual, or losing fluid. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, cells, or other material in the urine. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy urine, burning, frequent urges, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can present with urinary changes alongside fever, chills, or pain in the side or back. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change continues after you drink fluids normally and avoid judging the cause from one sample. Do not force large amounts of water if you have been told to restrict fluids. Arrange a medical assessment if the urine stays cloudy or amber, keeps returning, or occurs with burning, urgency, an unusual smell, or discomfort. A clinician may ask about medicines, recent exercise, fluid loss, and other symptoms, then request a urine test.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, visible blood, confusion, or feeling markedly unwell. These features can signal an infection or another problem needing timely evaluation. Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, or have severe pain.

Ask whether you need a urine test, whether your symptoms fit a urinary tract infection, and which changes should prompt follow-up. Tell the clinician when the color changed, whether it varies during the day, and what medicines or supplements you take.
