What should you know about clinical bronchiectasis?

Damage to the airway walls can make it harder to clear mucus. A person may have a daily cough, produce phlegm, feel breathless, or experience chest infections that return. The amount and colour of phlegm can change during a flare. Bronchiectasis is not diagnosed from cough alone; the history, examination, lung testing, and imaging help clinicians distinguish it from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, infection, or another cause.

Arrange a clinical review if cough or phlegm continues, especially after repeated infections. Assessment may include a chest X-ray, spirometry, sputum testing, or a CT scan when more detail is needed. Treatment is tailored to the cause and flare pattern and may include airway-clearance techniques, inhaled medicines, antibiotics for selected infections, and a plan for recognising worsening symptoms. Avoid smoking and keep recommended vaccinations up to date.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, or coughing up more than a small amount of blood. Contact a clinician promptly when fever, chest pain, a sudden increase in phlegm, or a marked change in phlegm accompanies worsening cough. Early review can identify an infection or an airway problem requiring treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms warrant spirometry or imaging, how to collect a sputum sample, and which airway-clearance method suits you. Discuss an action plan for flares, warning signs that need same-day care, and whether other lung conditions or past infections could be contributing.
