What a clear PET scan means

PET imaging tracks where a radiotracer such as FDG collects in the body. A report described as clear, negative, or showing no abnormal uptake indicates that the reader did not identify a metabolically suspicious focus on that examination. On a combined PET-CT, the CT portion also supplies anatomical detail that helps locate or explain areas of uptake.

A clear result does not exclude every cancer cell or every abnormality. Very small deposits may sit below the scanner's resolution, some tumour types take up little FDG, and treatment or blood glucose can affect uptake. The report therefore needs to be read alongside the reason for scanning, earlier images, examination findings, pathology, and other tests.

Review the written report with the clinician who requested the scan. Confirm whether “clear” refers to the whole examination or only a particular area, whether any non-cancer findings need attention, and whether the result changes treatment or follow-up. Keep planned appointments unless your care team specifically changes them.

If the scan was performed after treatment, ask what it says about treatment response and what will be used for ongoing monitoring. When symptoms or another test remain concerning, the next step may involve targeted imaging, laboratory testing, examination, or a biopsy even though PET activity was not seen.

Do not use a clear scan to dismiss a new or worsening symptom. Contact your clinical team promptly for a growing lump, unexplained bleeding, persistent fever, increasing pain, new weakness, or symptoms that interfere with eating or breathing. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion, or sudden one-sided weakness, regardless of the scan result.

Ask which body areas were assessed, whether the CT component found anything separate from tracer uptake, how this result compares with prior imaging, and what follow-up is planned. You can also ask whether your specific tumour type is reliably visible with the radiotracer used.
