What should you know about clear earwax buildup?

Earwax is made in the ear canal and normally moves outward as the skin renews itself. It can collect when the canal is narrow, when hearing aids or earbuds reduce natural movement, or when cotton buds and other objects push wax deeper. A blocked canal may make sounds seem quieter or distorted, and pressure can feel like an earache. Ringing can occur when wax changes the way sound reaches the eardrum. These symptoms can also have other causes, so they should not be attributed to wax without looking in the ear.

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, or fingers into the canal. They can injure the skin or push wax further in. If you have no history of a hole in the eardrum, ear surgery, or ear drainage, a pharmacist may suggest softening drops used exactly as directed. Keep water out if the ear is painful or draining. If blockage remains, a clinician can inspect the canal and discuss ear wax removal. Never use a candle in or near the ear.

Arrange an appointment if hearing remains reduced after softening drops, blockage keeps returning, or you are unsure whether wax is responsible. Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, discharge, dizziness, fever, or an object stuck in the ear. A hearing test may be useful when hearing does not return after the canal is clear.
