What should you know about clear but cloudy urine?

Clear usually describes how light or transparent urine looks, while cloudy describes a hazy quality. Both can appear together when urine is pale but contains crystals, mucus, cells or particles. The sample may also look different after standing. A [Urinary Tract Infection] can present with cloudy urine, burning, urgency or frequent urination. A [Kidney Infection] may add fever, chills or pain in the side or back. [Dehydration] more often makes urine concentrated, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Check whether the haze is present in a fresh sample and whether it continues over the next bathroom visits. Drink fluids normally unless you have been given a fluid limit. Note pain, burning, urgency, smell, blood, discharge, fever and changes in urine amount. If the finding persists or urinary symptoms occur, arrange a clinical review; a urine test can help distinguish infection from other explanations. Do not self-treat with antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Get prompt advice for cloudy urine with fever, chills, vomiting, side or back pain, visible blood or marked weakness. Seek urgent help if you become confused, faint, unable to keep fluids down or have severe pain. Pregnancy, childhood, repeated episodes or known kidney problems lower the threshold for contacting a clinician. A normal-looking colour does not cancel out concerning symptoms.
