Cloudy urine: what its clarity may mean

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, when minerals or mucus are present, or when a sample is mixed with vaginal discharge or other material. Dehydration often makes urine darker and stronger-smelling. Cloudiness with burning, frequent urination, urgency or lower abdominal discomfort can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back raises concern for infection involving the kidney. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change settles after drinking your usual amount of water and passing urine again. Do not force excessive fluids if a clinician has told you to restrict them. Record accompanying symptoms, medicines and whether the urine is pink, red, unusually dark or foul-smelling. If cloudiness persists or urinary symptoms develop, arrange a clinical review; a properly collected urine sample may help guide testing and treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice for cloudy urine with burning, urgency, blood, fever, chills or worsening lower abdominal pain. Seek urgent care for fever with flank or back pain, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, kidney disease or a weakened immune system can change how quickly urinary symptoms should be assessed.
