What should you know about cirrhosis stomach bloating?

Short answer
Stomach bloating with cirrhosis may come from gas or digestion, but a steadily enlarging abdomen can indicate fluid buildup and needs medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Fever, severe pain, confusion, vomiting blood, or breathing difficulty
Why your abdomen may feel swollen
Gas, constipation, food intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome can cause a feeling of fullness that changes during the day. Cirrhosis can also lead to ascites, in which fluid collects inside the abdomen. Ascites often makes the abdomen progressively larger or tight and may come with ankle swelling, reduced appetite, or breathlessness. The sensation of bloating does not by itself identify the cause.
Coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, and Giardiasis are other conditions a clinician may consider when symptoms include diarrhoea, pain, weight change, or a clear food or travel association.
What to do next
Tell your liver-care team if your waistline is increasing, clothes fit differently, or you feel full after small meals. Keep a brief record of abdominal size or tightness, bowel movements, meals, breathlessness, and leg swelling. Do not start diuretics, laxatives, herbal products, or a strict salt restriction without advice. Nutrition counselling can help adapt meals to your liver condition while checking that you still receive adequate nourishment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for severe or sudden abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, marked sleepiness, breathing difficulty, vomiting blood, or black stools. A rapidly enlarging or very tense abdomen, especially with new tenderness or feeling unwell, needs prompt assessment because infection or significant fluid accumulation may be present.

Questions people ask
How can I tell gas from fluid in the abdomen?
Gas often fluctuates and may improve after passing wind or a bowel movement; fluid can steadily increase tightness or size, but an examination is needed to tell the difference.
Can I reduce bloating by taking a water tablet?
Only if prescribed. Diuretics can affect kidney function and body salts, so the dose must be tailored and monitored.
