Circle cell anaemia: what to know

Anaemia means the blood is carrying less oxygen than the body needs, often because haemoglobin or healthy red blood cells are reduced. The phrase circle cell may be a misunderstanding, a local term, or a reference to the shape of red cells; it should not be used to guess the cause. Iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, thalassaemia, kidney disease, blood loss and other conditions can produce different patterns.

Symptoms may include tiredness, breathlessness with exertion, dizziness, pale skin, cold hands and feet or reduced concentration. These symptoms can have other causes, so diagnosis usually starts with a medical history and blood tests rather than treatment chosen from the name alone.

Write down the exact wording used by the clinician or shown on a report, and ask what test result it describes. Do not begin iron or other supplements until the suspected cause is checked; unnecessary treatment can delay the right diagnosis. Share family history, dietary pattern, bleeding, bowel symptoms, kidney problems and current medicines.

Keep follow-up appointments so treatment response and the underlying cause can be reviewed. Seek advice before strenuous activity if breathlessness or dizziness is prominent.

Arrange medical review for persistent tiredness, new cold intolerance, worsening daytime sleepiness, paleness or breathlessness. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, confusion, rapid deterioration or heavy bleeding.

Ask what “circle cell” refers to, whether the result shows anaemia or an inherited red-cell change, which tests are needed, whether family members need assessment, and how treatment will address the cause.
