Short answer

Chronic congestion and post nasal drip often reflect ongoing nasal or sinus inflammation, but allergy, infection and other causes should be considered.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clue
Itching and sneezing suggest an allergic trigger.
Useful detail
Record whether blockage is seasonal, indoor or one-sided.

Why it happens

Mucus normally drains from the nose into the throat without being noticed. Swollen nasal lining can narrow the passages, making the nose feel blocked and causing mucus to collect or run backwards. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy may cause sneezing, itching and clear drainage. Chronic sinusitis can bring facial pressure, reduced smell or thicker mucus. A common cold may trigger a temporary flare. Night-time blockage and noisy breathing can also occur with obstructive sleep apnoea, so the whole pattern matters.

Practical steps

Reduce exposure to a trigger you can identify, ventilate rooms, and keep bedding clean if dust sensitivity is suspected. Saline rinsing may loosen mucus when performed with safe prepared or appropriately treated water. Drink fluids and avoid smoke, which irritates nasal tissue. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether allergy medication or a nasal treatment is suitable; use sprays exactly as directed. Arrange assessment when blockage lasts, affects sleep, reduces smell, or keeps recurring. Note whether symptoms are seasonal, one-sided, worse indoors, or associated with reflux, snoring or facial pain.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, swelling around the eyes, severe headache with fever, confusion, a stiff neck, or sudden vision changes. Prompt review is appropriate for persistent one-sided blockage with bleeding, severe facial pain, or symptoms that worsen after initial improvement. Children with breathing pauses, struggling to breathe, or unusual sleepiness need urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Could allergy or chronic sinusitis explain this pattern? Is the drainage coming from nasal inflammation or another source? Which rinse or allergy medication is safe for me? Should my sleep and breathing be assessed?

Questions people ask

Can post nasal drip cause throat clearing?

Yes. Mucus touching the throat can cause repeated throat clearing, irritation or cough.

When is congestion more than a cold?

Persistence, recurrence, marked sleep disruption, facial pain or reduced smell warrants assessment for another cause.
