It is usually taken from a vein in your arm. The laboratory reports a group of results rather than a single cholesterol value, so your clinician considers the pattern alongside your age, blood pressure, smoking status, diabetes risk, family history, and any previous heart or blood-vessel problems.

Total cholesterol summarises cholesterol carried in the blood. LDL cholesterol can contribute to fatty deposits in artery walls, while HDL cholesterol helps transport cholesterol away from tissues for processing. Triglycerides are another type of blood fat and may rise with some dietary, metabolic, inherited, or medical factors.

A result outside your personal target does not diagnose heart disease by itself. Targets differ according to your overall risk and medical history. Your clinician may compare the result with earlier tests, review medicines and health conditions, or arrange a repeat test before recommending a change.

Ask the requesting clinic whether you need to fast. Some cholesterol panels can be taken without fasting, but your clinician may request a fasting sample in particular circumstances. Follow the instructions you receive about food, drinks, and regular medicines; do not stop a prescribed medicine unless a clinician tells you to.

After the test, discuss the full pattern rather than focusing on one flagged line.
