What should you know about cholecystitis liver function tests?

Liver function tests are blood tests that measure substances released or processed by the liver. In suspected gallbladder inflammation, a clinician may use them to look for a pattern suggesting impaired bile drainage, irritation of the bile ducts, or another liver problem. The results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and often imaging. A result outside the usual range does not identify one condition by itself, and a result within range does not rule out every gallbladder problem. Recent medicines, alcohol use, viral hepatitis, and other illnesses can affect interpretation.

Ask whether you need to fast and tell the clinician about prescription medicines, supplements, alcohol use, previous liver problems, and recent illness. Follow the laboratory instructions and do not stop prescribed treatment unless told to do so. Ask which parts of the panel were abnormal and whether the pattern points toward the liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts. Further assessment may include repeat blood tests or imaging. A clinician may consider Alcohol Use Disorder or Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C when the history and results suggest another explanation.

Seek urgent care if abdominal pain is severe or persistent, or if it occurs with fever, repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, pale stools, confusion, or faintness. These symptoms can signal significant inflammation or impaired bile drainage and should not wait for routine test results.
