What should you know about chin dandruff?

Dandruff is most familiar on the scalp, but similar scale can appear around the eyebrows, sides of the nose, beard area, and chin. Seborrheic dermatitis may cause flaky scale with redness, itch, or greasy patches. Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, dry skin, psoriasis, and infection can look similar, especially if the area is sore, sharply outlined, or changing quickly. Flaking itself does not identify one diagnosis.

Notice whether the scale is dry or greasy, whether the skin itches, and whether symptoms occur on the scalp or other facial areas. These details help a clinician distinguish a dandruff pattern from another facial rash.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing the flakes away, and stop newly introduced fragranced products around the area. Keep beard or facial hair clean and dry, and avoid picking, which can break the skin. A clinician may suggest a facial-safe antifungal or another treatment; scalp products are not automatically suitable for facial skin.
