What do chills during a period mean?

Some people feel cold or shivery around menstruation because of pain, fatigue, appetite changes, or shifts in body temperature regulation. Heavy bleeding may leave you weak or light-headed, particularly if it is new or much heavier than your usual pattern. Chills with fever, worsening pelvic pain, unpleasant-smelling discharge, or pain during urination are not explained by a period alone and can occur with a Urinary Tract Infection or another pelvic infection. Influenza and other illnesses can begin at the same time by coincidence. The cycle day, bleeding pattern, pregnancy possibility, temperature, and associated symptoms help separate these possibilities.

Rest, drink fluids, eat if able, and use comfortable layers rather than intense heat. Track bleeding, pain, temperature, dizziness, and whether chills settle as the discomfort improves. Follow only pain-relief instructions that are safe for your health, especially if pregnancy is possible, you have stomach or kidney disease, or you take blood thinners. Arrange a review if chills recur each cycle, interfere with daily activities, or occur with unusually heavy bleeding.

Seek urgent care for severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy bleeding that is difficult to manage, fever with worsening symptoms, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Emergency help is needed for confusion, trouble breathing, or collapse. Chills with fever and severe illness can occur with Sepsis, which requires immediate treatment. Do not assume a new fever or foul-smelling discharge is a normal period symptom.

Tell your clinician when the chills occur in relation to bleeding, how your flow compares with usual, and whether pain, fever, discharge, urinary changes, or dizziness are present.
