What do chills mean?

Short answer
Chills mean your muscles are contracting rapidly to create heat, often because your body temperature is changing or an infection is developing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Shivering may occur before or during a fever.
- Useful record
- Note temperature, timing, recurrence, and accompanying symptoms.
- Emergency signs
- Confusion, breathing difficulty, fainting, or severe weakness require urgent help.
What chills can signal
You may shiver before a fever becomes obvious, during a fever, or while recovering from one. Cold surroundings, wet clothing, low blood sugar, stress, and some medicines can also trigger shaking. Chills with cough or breathing discomfort can occur with Influenza or Pneumonia. Chills with burning urination or pain in the side may accompany a Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection. In a person who has recently travelled to a malaria area, repeated fever and chills need prompt assessment. Dengue Fever can also cause fever with chills and marked body aches. Chills alone do not identify one condition; the timing, temperature, other symptoms, medicines, and travel history all help a clinician assess the cause.
What to do now
Move to a comfortable room, change out of damp clothes, and use a light blanket while you are shivering. Check your temperature if you can, drink fluids in small amounts, and rest. Avoid very hot baths or piling on heavy layers if you have a fever. Record when the chills began, whether they recur, and any cough, pain, vomiting, rash, or urinary symptoms. A clinician can advise on symptom relief after considering pregnancy, allergies, existing illness, and regular medicines.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for chills with confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, a seizure, or severe pain. Get prompt assessment if you have a high or persistent fever, repeated shaking episodes, a new rash, inability to keep fluids down, or symptoms after travel to a malaria area. People who are pregnant, very young, older, or immunocompromised should seek advice early when chills occur with fever. Sepsis is a medical emergency; rapidly worsening illness with confusion, breathlessness, or cold clammy skin needs emergency care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what might explain the timing of your chills, whether your temperature pattern matters, and which examination or tests could help. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, urinary symptoms, breathing symptoms, and any condition that affects immunity. Ask which changes should prompt same-day review and how to manage fever safely at home.

Questions people ask
Can chills happen without a fever?
Yes. Cold exposure, stress, low blood sugar, medicines, and other causes can produce chills without a measured fever.
Do chills always mean an infection?
No. Infection is one possibility, but the surrounding symptoms and medical history determine whether assessment is needed.
