Chills Every Night: What They May Mean

Chills are a sensation of cold with shivering or trembling. They can happen when the body is trying to raise its temperature, including during an infection. Influenza, malaria, dengue fever, pneumonia, a urinary tract infection, or a kidney infection may cause chills alongside other symptoms. Night-time episodes can also follow a cool room, damp clothing, low blood sugar, anxiety, or a medicine effect. The timing alone cannot identify the cause.

Record when each episode begins, how long it lasts, whether your temperature is raised, and any cough, breathing change, headache, rash, diarrhoea, back pain, burning urine, or recent travel. This pattern helps a clinician decide whether you need examination or tests.

Check your temperature during an episode if you can, dress in light warm layers, and drink fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Rest and avoid alcohol while you feel unwell. Do not start leftover antibiotics or malaria treatment, because the correct medicine depends on the cause. Arrange a medical appointment if the episodes continue, disturb sleep, or come with repeated fever or another new symptom.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, a seizure, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness. Chills with a very high temperature, a new widespread rash, severe headache, stiff neck, severe abdominal or back pain, or little urine also need prompt assessment. These features can occur with serious infections such as sepsis, which requires immediate medical attention.

Ask whether your pattern suggests an infection, a medicine effect, or another cause; whether you need a urine test, blood tests, or chest assessment; and which symptoms should bring you back sooner. Mention travel, insect exposure, pregnancy possibility, long-term conditions, and every medicine or supplement you take.
