Chills during fever

During a fever, the brain can temporarily set a higher internal temperature. Muscles contract and relax quickly, producing shivering while the body moves toward that set point. Sweating may follow when the temperature begins to fall. This response explains the chills, but it does not show which illness caused the fever.

Influenza may bring sudden fever, aches, and cough. A urinary tract or kidney infection may include burning urination, frequent urination, or pain in the back or side. Pneumonia can cause cough and breathlessness. Dengue fever or malaria may be considered after relevant travel or mosquito exposure. Sepsis is a medical emergency associated with a rapidly worsening infection and severe unwellness.

Measure your temperature, note the time, and drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has restricted them. Wear light, comfortable clothing and use a blanket only for comfort; avoid extreme cooling. Follow the label or clinician advice for any fever medicine, and do not combine products that contain the same ingredient. Arrange medical advice if the fever persists, returns, or comes with a new symptom.

Go to urgent care for confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, a stiff neck, a severe headache, repeated vomiting, severe pain, a widespread rash, very little urine, or rapidly worsening weakness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with reduced immunity may need earlier advice. Do not wait for chills to stop if the person looks seriously ill.

Ask what temperature and duration warrant review, whether testing is needed, and which medicines fit your health conditions. Tell the clinician about travel, mosquito bites, recent procedures, sick contacts, and antibiotics already used.
