Short answer

Chills with post-nasal drip often accompany a respiratory illness, but persistent shaking or severe symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Post-nasal drip
Mucus can irritate the throat and trigger cough or throat clearing.
Self-care
Fluids, saline, rest, and avoiding smoke may reduce irritation.
Urgency
Breathing difficulty or confusion needs emergency care.

Understanding the symptoms

Post-nasal drip is mucus moving from the nose or sinuses toward the throat. It can cause throat clearing, cough, a tickling feeling, hoarseness, or an unpleasant taste. Allergies and viral respiratory infections are common contributors. Chills may occur when the body reacts to infection, but they can also follow cold exposure or exhaustion. Influenza, pneumonia, and sinusitis can include respiratory symptoms with chills; the combination does not establish a diagnosis.

Mucus that is clear and linked to sneezing or itchy eyes may fit an allergic pattern. Facial pressure, worsening congestion, or symptoms that continue should be reviewed. Breathlessness, chest pain, or marked weakness is more concerning than drainage alone.

Comfort measures

Drink fluids, rest, and use saline nasal spray or a saline rinse prepared with safe water to loosen mucus. Keep the head slightly raised during sleep and avoid smoke, dust, and other irritants. Wash hands and consider reducing close contact while respiratory infection is possible. A pharmacist can help choose a suitable treatment for congestion or allergy, but mention pregnancy, high blood pressure, glaucoma, and regular medicines before using decongestants. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

When to get checked

Seek emergency care for severe difficulty breathing, chest pressure, confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, or inability to stay awake. Arrange prompt assessment for shaking that is persistent, high or returning fever, severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, coughing blood, dehydration, or symptoms that are clearly worsening. People with lung disease, weak immunity, or significant pregnancy-related concerns should call a clinician earlier.

Questions to bring

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, a viral infection, sinusitis, or a chest problem; which nasal treatments are suitable; and whether examination or testing is needed. Describe mucus colour and amount, cough, breathing, fever readings, exposure to irritants, and how long the chills have lasted.

Questions people ask

Can post-nasal drip cause chills?

Drainage itself does not explain every episode of chills; a shared respiratory infection, cold exposure, or another cause may be involved.

When should I see a doctor for these symptoms?

Seek advice when chills persist, breathing symptoms appear, severe facial pain develops, or the illness worsens.
