Chills after pooping

A bowel movement can briefly affect the autonomic nervous system, especially if you strain, have pain, or pass stool quickly. This may cause chills, sweating, nausea, light-headedness, or a feeling of weakness that improves after you sit or lie down. Cold surroundings, dehydration, and not eating can make the sensation stronger.

Chills with diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, painful urination, cough, or a new rash may point to an infection or another condition rather than the bowel movement itself. Gastroenteritis, a urinary tract infection, kidney infection, or influenza can include chills. A symptom does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Sit safely until the sensation passes, then drink fluids and avoid pushing or prolonged straining. Fibre-rich foods, regular water, and gentle movement may help prevent constipation if those are suitable for you. Notice whether the stool is hard, loose, bloody, or unusually dark, and record pain, fever, and how long the chills last. Do not drive if you feel faint.

Seek emergency help for fainting that does not quickly resolve, confusion, severe abdominal pain, heavy rectal bleeding, black tarry stool, trouble breathing, or cold clammy skin with marked weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for repeated chills, fever, ongoing diarrhoea, dehydration, painful urination, back pain, or symptoms in someone who is pregnant, elderly, or immunocompromised.

Tell your doctor whether you strained, felt faint, had pain, or had diarrhoea, and ask whether constipation, dehydration, medication, or infection could be involved. Ask which bowel changes to monitor and when testing is needed.
