What happens during a normal vaginal delivery

Labour involves regular contractions that soften and open the cervix, followed by the baby's descent and birth, then delivery of the placenta. The maternity team checks the baby's heartbeat and the mother's pulse, blood pressure, contractions, pain, and progress. Vaginal examinations may be offered to assess cervical change and the baby's position. The term normal delivery describes the route of birth, not a single fixed experience: labour may begin on its own or be induced, and pain relief, assistance, or other interventions may still be part of safe care.

Discuss your birth preferences, pain-relief choices, mobility needs, feeding plans, and who you want present with your maternity team. Learn how your service wants you to make contact when contractions begin or waters break. During uncomplicated labour, changing position, focused breathing, massage, fluids when permitted, and bladder emptying may improve comfort. Monitoring findings or stalled progress can change the plan. Assisted vaginal birth or caesarean birth may be recommended if continuing labour is less safe for you or the baby.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, reduced or altered baby movements, severe constant abdominal pain, a severe headache with visual changes, breathing difficulty, collapse, or fluid that is green, brown, or unpleasant-smelling. Call when your waters break even without contractions, following the instructions from your own service. After birth, urgent warning signs include very heavy bleeding, faintness, chest pain, breathlessness, seizures, or severe worsening pain. Fever, wound concerns, calf swelling, or feeling acutely unwell also requires prompt assessment.

Ask what monitoring is recommended for your pregnancy, which comfort and pain-relief methods are available, and under what circumstances induction, assisted birth, or caesarean birth might be advised. Clarify your unit's contact instructions, arrangements for immediate skin-to-skin contact, newborn care, and feeding support.
