Chickenpox time period

After exposure, there may be a quiet interval before symptoms. Feeling unwell or fever can come before the rash, and fresh spots may continue to appear while earlier ones become blisters, then scabs. The illness does not progress in a perfectly uniform way, so different lesions may look different on the same day.

People can spread chickenpox shortly before the rash appears and while new blisters are forming. Infectiousness generally falls once every blister has dried and crusted. Crusts should be left to detach naturally, since picking can injure healing skin and introduce bacteria.

Stay home from school, work, or group activities while infectious, and avoid contact with people at higher risk. Support recovery with fluids, rest, cool bathing, and non-irritating clothing. Antihistamine treatment may be discussed for troublesome itch. Contact a GP consultation service before going in person if chickenpox is possible.

Get medical advice if fever persists, returns after improving, or accompanies worsening skin pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or pus. Seek urgent help for breathing problems, confusion, severe drowsiness, or difficulty drinking. Ask for early advice during pregnancy or when the affected person is very young, an adult, or immunocompromised, because timing can influence treatment decisions.

Ask when the person became infectious, what sign confirms that isolation can end, how to care for crusting lesions, and whether antiviral treatment should be considered.
