Chickenpox in Danish: what to know

The Danish word skoldkopper describes chickenpox, while the medical name is varicella. Symptoms may start with fever, tiredness or headache, followed by itchy red spots that become small blisters and crusts. The rash may be at different stages at the same time. Shingles is called helvedesild in Danish and is a separate pattern caused by reactivation of the same virus. A clinician can help when the wording or appearance is confusing.

Rest, drink fluids and keep the skin cool. Loose clothing, short nails and gentle washing can reduce irritation and scratching. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about an antihistamine or fever medicine that fits the person’s age and health. Avoid close contact with pregnant people, newborns and people with reduced immunity until every blister has crusted. Tell a clinic about the rash before arriving, and do not use leftover prescription medicine.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe drowsiness, neck stiffness, severe headache, repeated vomiting or eye involvement. Arrange same-day advice if fever persists or returns, or if the skin becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, painful or draining. Prompt assessment is especially important during pregnancy or when immunity is reduced. A recent rash may be eligible for antiviral treatment depending on its cause and timing.

Ask whether the rash is skoldkopper or helvedesild, how long the person should stay away from others, which medicines are suitable, and whether household contacts need vaccination advice. If language is a concern, request an interpreter so treatment instructions are clear.
