Chickenpox and hepatitis: what to know

How the structures involved in Chickenpox differ from normal

Short answer

Chickenpox with possible hepatitis needs prompt medical assessment because liver inflammation can cause unusual tiredness, nausea, abdominal discomfort or yellowing of the skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver
Symptoms to report
Yellowing, dark urine, nausea or right-sided abdominal discomfort
Medication step
Review all medicines with a clinician

What the concern means

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. During chickenpox, a person may feel unwell from the infection itself, so symptoms do not prove that the liver is affected. Concern rises with yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, persistent nausea or vomiting, pain beneath the right ribs, marked drowsiness or unusual bleeding. A clinician may review medicines and arrange blood tests to assess liver function. Do not assume a blistering rash explains these symptoms without evaluation.

What to do now

Contact a GP Consultation service promptly and explain that chickenpox is suspected or confirmed, when symptoms began, and every medicine or supplement being taken. Avoid alcohol and do not take extra paracetamol or other medicine beyond the labelled or prescribed direction until a clinician confirms what is suitable. Rest, drink fluids and avoid close contact with vulnerable people while contagious. Antiviral Treatment may be considered by a clinician; it should not be borrowed or self-started.

Urgent warning signs

Seek urgent care for yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion, severe sleepiness, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, fainting, breathing difficulty or inability to drink. A rapidly worsening rash, bleeding, or a very high or persistent fever also warrants prompt review. Take a list of medicines with you, especially if treatment for another condition affects the liver.

Questions to ask

Ask whether liver tests are needed, which pain or fever medicines are safe, whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, and what symptoms indicate worsening liver inflammation. Ask when follow-up should occur and how to protect household contacts.

Questions people ask

Does chickenpox always cause hepatitis?

No. Feeling unwell is common with infection, while suspected liver inflammation requires clinical assessment.

Can I use usual pain medicine with chickenpox and possible hepatitis?

Check with a clinician or pharmacist first, because the safest choice depends on liver symptoms, health history and other medicines.
