What should you know about chickenpox beginning?

The first symptoms can appear before the spots are obvious. Small red or pink marks may start on the chest, back, or face and then spread to other areas. They can become raised, turn into itchy blisters, and later dry into scabs. New spots may appear while older ones are already crusting, so the rash can show several stages at once. Chickenpox is caused by varicella-zoster virus and can spread to people who have not developed immunity. Shingles is a later condition caused by the same virus becoming active again, rather than a new beginning of chickenpox.

A fever may occur alongside the rash, and scratching can break the skin and allow bacterial infection. Avoid close contact with pregnant people, newborn babies, and anyone with a weakened immune system until a clinician advises that exposure is no longer a concern.

Keep the skin cool, wear loose clothing, and use gentle washing rather than rubbing the blisters. Keep fingernails short and try not to scratch; clean hands can reduce the chance of germs entering broken skin. Drink fluids and rest. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable for itching and which fever medicine is appropriate for the person’s age and health. Do not give aspirin to a child or teenager with a suspected viral illness.
