New spots may appear while earlier ones are already blistering or scabbing, so the rash can look mixed. It often affects the trunk, face, scalp, and limbs. Pimples are not the same as chicken pox spots; acne, folliculitis, and other rashes can look similar.

Keep fingernails short, wash hands, and use gentle cleansing with lukewarm water. Loose clothing and cool compresses may reduce irritation. Do not pop blisters or peel scabs. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on itch relief that is suitable for the person’s age and health. Avoid close contact with people who are pregnant, newborn, or immunocompromised until a clinician confirms the contagious period has passed.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe drowsiness, a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly worsening rash. Contact a clinician promptly if spots become very painful, hot, swollen, or drain pus, or if fever returns after improving.
