Chesty cough with blood: what to know

A small streak can follow forceful coughing or inflammation from Acute Bronchitis, a Common Cold, or another airway infection. Blood can also arise from conditions such as Asthma, Bronchiectasis, or a long-lasting cough. Blood from the nose, mouth, or throat can mix with mucus, so the source is not always the lungs.

Note whether the blood is bright red or dark, mixed through mucus or separate, and whether it followed vomiting, nosebleeding, or vigorous coughing. Breathlessness, fever, chest pain, dizziness, or feeling faint makes the situation more urgent.

Contact a clinician promptly, even if the amount seems small or the cough began with a cold. Keep a note of when it happened, how often, the appearance of the phlegm, and any medicines that affect bleeding. Do not smoke, and avoid taking someone else’s antibiotics or cough medicine. If you take prescribed blood-thinning medicine, mention it rather than stopping it without advice.

Call emergency services for heavy or ongoing bleeding, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue or grey lips. Urgent assessment is also needed when blood appears with a fast deterioration, significant fever, or marked weakness. A child, older adult, or person with known lung disease should be assessed without delay.
