Chest tightness with post-nasal drip

Mucus draining from the nose into the throat can cause throat clearing, a cough, hoarseness, or a sensation of mucus. Repeated coughing may fatigue the chest muscles and make the chest feel sore or constricted. Nasal allergy, a cold, or sinus irritation can be behind the drip. Wheezing, breathlessness, or tightness independent of coughing can point toward airway narrowing such as asthma or COPD. Acid reflux may also irritate the throat and mimic upper-airway symptoms.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and consider saline nasal rinsing if a clinician or pharmacist has confirmed it is suitable and you can use safe water. Notice whether the sensation follows coughing, lying down, dust exposure, or meals. Use prescribed nasal or inhaled medicines as directed; do not share an inhaler. Arrange review if symptoms last, interfere with sleep, or include wheeze, fever, or reduced exercise tolerance.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or chest pressure spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek urgent medical advice for rapidly worsening tightness, high fever with breathing symptoms, coughing blood, or inability to speak comfortably because of breathlessness. Post-nasal drip should not be used to explain away a new or severe chest symptom.
