Chest tightness with pneumonia

Pneumonia commonly involves cough, fever or chills, tiredness, and breathlessness; chest discomfort may become sharper with a deep breath or cough. The illness can affect one or both lungs and may make ordinary activity feel harder. Similar tightness can occur with asthma, COPD, reflux, or heart conditions, so the presence of cough does not confirm pneumonia. A clinician may check breathing, temperature, oxygen level, and chest sounds, then decide whether further tests are needed.

Rest, drink fluids if you can do so safely, and avoid smoking. Take medicines exactly as prescribed; antibiotics are useful only when a clinician decides they are appropriate. Note fever, cough, phlegm, breathing effort, chest pain, and whether symptoms are improving or worsening. Arrange medical assessment promptly if pneumonia is suspected, especially for an older adult, a child, pregnancy, or someone with a long-term heart or lung condition.

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or chest pressure that spreads to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek urgent review when fever persists, breathing worsens, you cannot keep fluids down, or chest tightness is increasing. Do not wait for a cough to become severe before asking for help.
