Chest tightness from vaping: what to know

Vapour and its ingredients can irritate the throat and airways, provoking cough, wheeze, breathlessness, or a tight feeling. Symptoms may also reflect asthma, infection, reflux, anxiety, or another heart or lung problem. The device, liquid, frequency of use, and any recent change in product are useful details for a clinician.

Stop vaping for now and avoid smoke or other inhaled irritants. Rest, drink water, and note whether symptoms improve away from exposure. Do not borrow an inhaler or use leftover medicine. Seek a same-day assessment if tightness persists, recurs, or comes with cough, wheeze, fever, vomiting, or reduced ability to exercise. A clinician can check your breathing and advise on quitting support.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, rapidly worsening tightness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, or chest pressure with sweating or spreading pain. Do not vape again to test whether the symptom returns, and do not drive if you feel seriously unwell.
