Chest tightness from GERD: what to know

GERD happens when stomach contents move back into the food pipe and irritate its lining. Chest discomfort may follow meals, worsen when bending or lying down, or occur with sour fluid, throat irritation, cough, or a sensation of food coming back up. Reflux symptoms can resemble angina or airway symptoms, and the two problems can occur together.

Keep upright after eating, choose smaller meals, and identify foods or drinks that reliably trigger symptoms. Avoid eating close to bedtime and raise the head of your sleeping surface if a clinician recommends it. Use reflux medicine only as directed by a healthcare professional or pharmacist. Arrange review if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, or make swallowing difficult.

Emergency care is needed for heavy or worsening pressure, difficulty breathing, fainting, cold sweating, severe weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek prompt medical care for trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or chest tightness brought on by exertion.
