Chest tightness and indigestion

Indigestion may cause burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the throat, belching, bloating, or discomfort after a meal or when lying down. Acid reflux can irritate the food pipe and feel like pressure in the chest. Angina is chest discomfort related to reduced blood flow to the heart and may be brought on by activity, stress, or cold air. Asthma and COPD can also cause chest discomfort when airflow is restricted. The timing and associated symptoms help a clinician assess the pattern, but they do not prove its cause.

Pause strenuous activity and remain upright. Notice whether food, lying down, exercise, or emotional stress preceded the episode. Avoid a large meal while symptoms are active, and do not take someone else’s prescription medicine. If a clinician has already advised a reflux treatment, use it only as directed. Arrange an appointment when indigestion keeps returning, swallowing becomes difficult, or chest tightness is unexplained. Keep a note of meals, timing, and associated symptoms.

Call emergency services for crushing or persistent chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, severe weakness, vomiting with chest pain, or discomfort spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Get urgent help when symptoms begin during exertion or do not improve with rest. Do not rely on the presence of belching, burning, or a recent meal to rule out a heart problem.

Ask whether your pattern fits reflux, whether heart or breathing checks are needed, which medicines could irritate the stomach, and what changes should prompt urgent care. Mention swallowing trouble, weight change, black stools, vomiting, or symptoms that wake you at night.
