Chest tightness after flu: what to know

Frequent coughing can strain the chest wall, while airway inflammation can leave a tight feeling or cough after the fever improves. A flare of Asthma or COPD may present with chest tightness, even when wheezing is not obvious. Reflux can also be triggered by coughing or medicines. Chest pain with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, confusion or spreading discomfort is not something to attribute to recovery; it may need urgent assessment for a heart or lung problem.

Rest, drink fluids as advised for you, and return to activity gradually once you are recovering. Note whether tightness follows coughing, walking, lying down or exposure to irritants. Follow any prescription instructions and do not use another person’s inhaler. Arrange a review if the symptom is worsening, limits normal activity, returns after improving, or continues beyond the expected recovery pattern.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse, confusion, severe or persistent chest pressure, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Seek same-day care for returning fever, coughing blood, dehydration, marked weakness, rapid breathing, or breathlessness that is new or worsening. People with existing heart or lung disease should use a lower threshold for contacting their clinician.
