Chest tightness after endoscopy: what to know

The scope and air used during an upper endoscopy can leave temporary throat, upper chest or abdominal discomfort. Reflux may also flare around the procedure, particularly while swallowing is returning to normal. These explanations do not account for every type of chest pain. New pressure, breathlessness, faintness or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back may reflect a heart problem such as Angina. A sore throat alone is different from difficulty swallowing or a tight throat.

Follow the discharge instructions from the endoscopy team, including when to drink and eat. Rest, remain upright if reflux is suspected, and note when the tightness began and whether it is improving. Contact the facility that performed the procedure if the symptom is new, persistent or unclear; they know which findings and medicines were involved. Do not drive if sedation instructions restrict it, and do not take unapproved pain medicines.

Call emergency services for severe or increasing chest pain, difficult breathing, collapse, blue lips, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Seek urgent medical care for fever, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, a swollen abdomen, inability to swallow liquids, or a new fast or irregular heartbeat. Prompt review matters even if the procedure was uncomplicated.

Ask what discomfort is expected for your specific procedure, when to call the endoscopy unit, which medicines are safe, and whether your symptoms suggest reflux, a breathing issue or a complication that needs examination.
