Chest tightness with a cough: what to know

Chest tightness with a cough often reflects irritated or narrowed airways, but breathing difficulty, blood, or severe illness requires urgent assessment. The cough may be dry or productive, and tightness may worsen with exertion, cold air, smoke, or repeated coughing. Fever, wheeze, and the duration of symptoms help guide the next step.

Acute Bronchitis and the Common Cold can inflame the airways and make the chest feel tight. Asthma may cause variable tightness, cough, and wheeze, while Bronchiectasis can bring a long-term cough with mucus. Allergic Rhinitis may cause post-nasal mucus that irritates the throat and triggers cough. Acid Reflux can provoke cough after meals or when lying down. Bronchiolitis mainly affects young children. Chronic Cough needs review when it persists or keeps returning.

Rest, drink fluids as tolerated, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and keep track of fever, mucus colour, wheeze, and breathlessness. Sit upright if coughing is worse while lying down. Use only medicines or inhalers prescribed for you, and follow their directions. Arrange a review if symptoms are not improving, interrupt sleep, or repeatedly return after infections.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, chest pressure, or coughing blood. Get urgent advice for rapidly worsening symptoms, a high fever with marked weakness, or difficulty speaking because of breathlessness. Children with poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or laboured breathing need prompt medical assessment.

Ask whether the cough sounds infectious, allergic, reflux-related, or airway-related; whether your breathing needs examination; which treatments are suitable; and how long to wait before returning if it persists.
