Can you have a chest infection without a cough?

A person may instead notice fever, chills, fatigue, chest tightness, breathlessness, noisy breathing or pain when taking a deep breath. Some infections produce little mucus, while others cause symptoms before a cough develops. These signs can overlap with a [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/), flu-like illness or conditions outside the lungs. A cough or absence of cough cannot confirm the cause by itself.

Rest and drink fluids as tolerated. Note your temperature, breathing changes, chest pain and ability to carry out ordinary activities. Avoid smoking and vaping while your airways are irritated. Do not use antibiotics without advice.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, coughing blood or intense chest pain. Seek prompt medical review for a persistent fever, worsening breathing, marked weakness, or symptoms in someone who is pregnant, older, immunocompromised or living with heart or lung disease.

Ask what findings support a chest infection, whether your lungs need imaging, and which symptom changes should trigger reassessment. Tell the clinician about recent viral illness, sick contacts, travel, medicines, allergies and any chronic respiratory condition.
