Chest burning pain: what to know

Acid Reflux often causes burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth or symptoms after eating or lying down. Gastritis or a Peptic Ulcer may cause upper abdominal discomfort and nausea. Pneumonia can cause chest pain with cough, fever or breathlessness, while Shingles may cause burning or sensitivity on one side before a rash appears. Angina may feel like pressure, squeezing or burning with exertion. Pulmonary Embolism can cause sudden chest pain and breathlessness. Panic Disorder may cause burning or tightness with a racing heart, trembling or intense fear, but this diagnosis should not be assumed during a new episode.

Stop exertion and record when the burning started, what you were doing, whether food or position affects it, and which other symptoms are present. Do not drive yourself if chest pain is severe or accompanied by faintness or breathlessness. Arrange prompt clinical review for recurrent symptoms, trouble swallowing, vomiting, black stools, fever, a new rash or pain that occurs with activity. Medication choice depends on the cause and your health history.

Call emergency services for burning chest pain that is severe, persistent or worsening, or comes with breathlessness, fainting, cold sweats, nausea, coughing blood, blue lips or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Sudden chest pain with rapid breathing, collapse or one-sided leg swelling also needs emergency assessment. These warning signs matter even when the sensation feels like indigestion.
