What should you know about cherry red mark on skin?

A smooth, bright-red mark may be a cherry angioma, a benign growth of small blood vessels. A mark that is itchy, scaly, or linked to a new product may fit contact dermatitis; heat and sweating can cause heat rash, while sun exposure can cause sunburn. Rosacea often affects the central face, and psoriasis may create well-defined inflamed plaques with scale. Cellulitis more often produces spreading warmth, tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Colour by itself cannot identify the cause. Consider when it began, whether it changes with pressure, and whether it is enlarging, crusting, blistering, or accompanied by other symptoms.

Photograph the mark in consistent lighting, avoid picking it, and pause any new fragranced or irritating product on the area. Keep the skin protected from sun and arrange a clinical review if it persists, returns, or has no clear trigger. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Get urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, warmth, swelling, fever, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or feeling very unwell. Prompt review is also needed for a mark that bleeds repeatedly, develops a persistent ulcer or crust, or changes quickly. These signs indicate a need for assessment; they do not identify one specific condition.
