What should you know about cherry angioma malignancy?

A cherry angioma, also called a red mole or Campbell de Morgan spot, is a common skin growth made from clustered tiny blood vessels. It may appear as a bright red, purple-red, or deeper reddish spot, and it can be smooth or slightly raised. The trunk, arms, shoulders, and other areas of the skin may be affected. A cherry angioma does not become malignant simply because it is present.

These spots can bleed if they are scratched, rubbed by clothing, or nicked during shaving. Bleeding alone does not establish cancer, although a spot that repeatedly bleeds without an obvious injury merits a clinical look. A photograph and examination can help distinguish a typical angioma from another vascular lesion or a skin cancer that happens to look red.

If the spot is stable and does not bother you, monitoring it at home may be reasonable. Record its appearance in a clear photograph and avoid picking or trying to cut it off. Arrange a dermatology appointment if you are uncertain about the diagnosis, if several spots appear quickly, or if the lesion is irritating, catching on clothing, or bleeding often.

Removal is optional for a confirmed cherry angioma and may be considered for recurrent bleeding or cosmetic concern. A clinician may discuss pulsed dye laser treatment or electrosurgery after examining the lesion. The choice depends on its size, location, surface, and your skin characteristics; treated areas can temporarily look red, crusted, or darker while healing.

Book a prompt skin assessment for a red spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or surface; develops a firm or irregular edge; forms a sore that does not heal; or bleeds repeatedly without a clear cause. Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop after firm direct pressure, especially if you feel faint or unwell. Do not rely on appearance alone to rule out a different diagnosis.
