Cherry angioma on the lip: what to know

Cherry angiomas are collections of small superficial blood vessels. On or near the lip, a spot may look red, purple, or darker, and it can bleed after biting, shaving, wiping, or dryness. Other vascular marks, irritation, infection, and pigmented lesions can look similar, so appearance alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

The exact position matters: a mark on the outer lip skin is different from a lesion on the moist inner lip. Note when it appeared, whether it changes, and what triggers bleeding or soreness. These details help a clinician assess it.

Avoid biting, picking, and applying wart or mole-removal products. Use a bland lip moisturiser if dryness is causing cracking, and press clean gauze gently against minor bleeding. Do not cauterise the spot yourself, because lip tissue can be injured and bleeding may be difficult to control.

Ask whether the mark is on the outer lip or inner lining, what diagnoses need consideration, and whether it should be photographed or examined over time. If removal is appropriate, ask about eating, speaking, wound care, and pigment change during healing.
