Bleeding can look like a period or be heavier and may include small clots. Cramping is often felt low in the abdomen. Early pregnancy sensations, such as breast tenderness or nausea, may lessen, but symptom changes alone cannot confirm a loss.

A urine test may become lighter or negative after an earlier positive result because the pregnancy hormone is falling. Home test line strength also varies with urine concentration and the test used, so comparing lines is not a reliable diagnosis.

Bleeding and pain can occur in a chemical miscarriage, an ongoing early pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy. Clinicians interpret the pattern using your symptoms, repeat blood hormone measurements and ultrasound when the timing makes it useful. Chemical miscarriage often presents before anything can be seen inside the uterus on a scan.

Tell an early pregnancy, maternity or gynaecology service about a positive test followed by bleeding or pain. Note when the symptoms began, the amount of bleeding, pain location, dizziness and any previous ectopic pregnancy or tubal treatment.

Use pads rather than internal menstrual products while monitoring active bleeding, and follow individual advice about pain medicine. Attend repeat blood tests or a transvaginal ultrasound if arranged. Do not rely on a negative home test to dismiss severe symptoms, because the pregnancy location may still need clinical assessment.

Get urgent help for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, pain mainly on one side, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, pronounced dizziness, unusual paleness, or bleeding that quickly soaks through pads. These symptoms can occur with internal bleeding or substantial vaginal blood loss.

Fever, increasing tenderness, unpleasant-smelling discharge or feeling increasingly unwell needs prompt medical advice. Until a clinician has confirmed that the pregnancy has resolved and an ectopic pregnancy is excluded, keep every requested follow-up appointment.

Ask what the hormone trend shows, whether the pregnancy location has been established, which pain relief is appropriate and how long monitoring should continue. Confirm where to seek urgent help and whether any ongoing bleeding, infection symptoms or emotional distress changes the follow-up plan.
