Chemical miscarriage

It is also called a chemical pregnancy. The name refers to detection through the pregnancy hormone in urine or blood; it does not mean chemicals caused the loss.

A home pregnancy test may first be positive and later become negative, or blood tests may show that the pregnancy hormone is falling. Bleeding may resemble a period or be heavier, sometimes with cramps and small clots. Some people notice no clear physical change.

Very early losses often occur because the pregnancy did not develop normally, and ordinary activities do not cause them. An early positive test followed by bleeding cannot by itself show where the pregnancy was located, so symptoms and follow-up matter.

Contact a maternity, early pregnancy or gynaecology service for guidance, particularly if the pregnancy has not been located on a scan. A clinician may arrange repeat pregnancy hormone tests and, when appropriate, a transvaginal ultrasound to distinguish a completed early loss from an ongoing or ectopic pregnancy.

Use sanitary pads if you need to track bleeding, take only pain relief considered suitable for you, and rest according to how you feel. Emotional responses vary; support from someone you trust or a healthcare professional can help. Medical or surgical management is not usually needed after a completed very early loss, but the plan depends on the assessment.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, looking very pale, or heavy bleeding that rapidly soaks pads. These can signal significant blood loss or an ectopic pregnancy, which can occur even when a pregnancy test is becoming fainter.

Arrange prompt advice for fever, worsening pelvic pain, unpleasant-smelling discharge or bleeding that concerns you. Continue planned hormone tests or scans until the clinical team confirms that follow-up is complete.

Ask whether the pregnancy location is known, whether repeat hormone testing or ultrasound is needed, how to manage pain and bleeding, and when you can try to conceive again if you wish. Also clarify how to access emotional support and whom to contact if symptoms change.
