What should you know about chemical conjunctivitis treatment?

An irritant can inflame the conjunctiva, the surface covering the white of the eye and inner eyelids. Symptoms may include redness, watering, burning, gritty discomfort, eye discharge or light sensitivity. The severity depends on the substance, its concentration, and how long it remained in contact with the eye. Chemical exposure is different from infectious Conjunctivitis, so antibiotic treatment is not automatically appropriate. A clinician may check the eye surface, vision and eyelids after irrigation to decide whether further treatment or specialist review is needed.

Start rinsing the affected eye with clean, gently flowing water or sterile saline immediately. Hold the eyelids open, remove contact lenses if they come out easily during rinsing, and continue flushing while arranging urgent medical care. Do not rub the eye, apply household substances, or use leftover drops. Take the product container or a photograph of its label if this can be done safely. Avoid driving if vision is blurred; ask someone to help you reach a GP Consultation or emergency service.

Get urgent assessment after any significant chemical splash, especially if pain, blurred vision, persistent redness, discharge or Light Sensitivity continues after rinsing. Emergency help is needed for severe pain, loss of vision, inability to open the eye, or exposure to a strong cleaning or industrial substance. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen: eye-surface damage can require treatment even when the eye initially looks only mildly red.

Ask whether the eye surface and vision are intact, how long to continue prescribed drops, which activities to avoid, and which change should trigger an urgent recheck.
