Cheek freckles: what to know

Freckles commonly appear as light brown to darker brown spots on sun-exposed skin, including the cheeks. They are usually flat rather than raised and can vary in visibility across seasons. A clinician may distinguish freckles from other pigmented spots by examining their pattern, edges, colour, and history.

Not every new or changing cheek mark is a freckle. A spot that becomes asymmetrical, develops several colours, bleeds, crusts, or changes in size should be assessed rather than treated as a cosmetic concern.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed, reapply when appropriate, and add shade, a hat, or sunglasses during strong daylight. Sun protection helps reduce darkening and lowers the chance that treatment results are undermined by new pigment.
