What should you know about channel ECG machines?

An ECG machine detects small electrical signals produced as the heart beats and displays them as waveforms. Multiple channels allow the recording to show electrical activity from different views of the heart. A routine ECG can help a clinician assess rhythm, heart rate, and patterns that may suggest strain or reduced blood flow, but a tracing is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination, and medical history. Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists, and ankles. Tell the clinician about chest symptoms, palpitations, implanted devices, or skin sensitivity. You may be asked to rest quietly while adhesive electrodes are placed; remaining still and breathing normally helps reduce interference. The recording itself is brief, and removing the electrodes may pull slightly on hair or irritate sensitive skin.

An ECG may be arranged for chest discomfort, fainting, breathlessness, or a racing or irregular heartbeat. Do not wait for a routine test if chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, or new weakness occurs; call emergency services immediately. A normal tracing does not always explain intermittent symptoms, so tell the clinician when episodes begin, how long they last, and what you feel.

Ask why the ECG is recommended, whether you need a resting or monitored recording, what the result shows, and whether further assessment is needed if symptoms come and go.
