Chafing and vaginal yeast infection

Chafing is surface irritation caused by friction, heat, sweat, or tight clothing. Vaginal thrush is an overgrowth of Candida yeast and commonly presents with itching, soreness, and a thick white discharge that does not have a strong smell.

Friction irritation tends to sit where skin or clothing rubs and may feel raw, tender, or burning. Thrush often affects the vulva and vagina, and can cause stinging during urination or sex as well as characteristic discharge.

Symptoms alone do not always separate thrush from dermatitis, bacterial infection, or a sexually transmitted infection. Odour, sores, unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, or a change from your familiar pattern deserves clinical assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Pause activities that worsen rubbing, change out of damp clothing, wash gently with water or an unperfumed cleanser, and pat the area dry. Loose, breathable underwear can reduce heat and friction. Avoid vaginal douching, fragranced products, and scratching.

If thrush has been diagnosed before and the same symptoms return, a pharmacist or clinician can advise on a suitable antifungal. Seek individual advice before treatment during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or if you take other medicines.

Book an assessment if this is your first suspected yeast infection, symptoms persist after treatment, episodes keep returning, or the skin is cracked, blistered, ulcerated, or increasingly painful.

Obtain prompt care for fever, lower abdominal or pelvic pain, foul-smelling or coloured discharge, difficulty passing urine, or symptoms during pregnancy. These features can point to something other than simple chafing or thrush.

Ask whether the irritation looks like friction injury, thrush, dermatitis, or another infection; whether a swab or sexual-health test is appropriate; and which treatment is safe with your medicines or pregnancy status. Mention recent antibiotics, new skin products, discharge changes, and repeated episodes.
