The images may reveal narrowing around the cord, disc or bone-related changes, ligament thickening, and altered signal within the cord. MRI does not replace the neurological examination; the report must be matched with symptoms and physical findings.

A scan can show anatomical narrowing in someone who has few symptoms, while another person’s examination may show important cord dysfunction. For that reason, wording such as stenosis, cord compression, or cord signal change is considered in clinical context rather than treated as a diagnosis by itself.

The clinician also looks at the level and direction of pressure, the number of affected areas, spinal alignment, and whether the images explain changes in walking, hand control, strength, reflexes, or sensation. These details help guide monitoring and any surgical discussion.

Tell the imaging team about implanted devices, metal fragments, previous surgery, pregnancy, severe kidney problems, or difficulty lying flat. Mention claustrophobia before the appointment so available support can be discussed. Remove metal items as instructed and answer the safety checklist accurately.

During the scan, keeping still improves image clarity, and hearing protection reduces the impact of scanner noise. Afterward, arrange review with the requesting clinician rather than interpreting isolated report terms yourself. Bring details of symptom timing and progression so the images can be compared with your function.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly worsening arm or leg weakness, repeated falls, sudden inability to walk safely, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin. These neurological changes determine urgency even if an MRI is already booked.

New weakness, numbness, or poor coordination after a significant neck injury also needs emergency evaluation. Take any implant information with you if available, but do not postpone urgent care while searching for documents.

Ask which level is affected, whether the cord is compressed, whether cord signal is altered, and how closely the images match your examination. Clarify whether more tests are needed, what activity guidance applies now, how quickly specialist review should occur, and which changes should prompt an earlier return.
